Look up the lake, the river or the bay and see what swims there, how big it grows and where it stands through the year, with the numbers left beside the advice. Then what you need to go: the fishing licence, the week's bite table, and the depth chart where the lake has been sounded.

Turn the wind over Bolmen
Bolmen is 35 km long and lies north-east to south-west, so a wind along the lake builds a sea. Pick where it blows from.

In summer the waves push food and baitfish towards the shore the wind stands on, and the predators follow. A water's page reads its map this way: the bays that warm first in spring, the inlets, the sounds where the fish have to pass. What the wind is doing today is Huggtabell's job.

This is what Bolmen's water usually does through the year, and what each line means for the fishing.
The biggest fish measured sets the size
Bolmen again. The largest fish of each kind that has been measured here decides how big the bait should be.
A bait of 8–20 cm.
A bait of 12–29 cm.
A bait of 2–12 cm.
The prey in the lake measures 8.7 cm (ruffe), 12.3 cm (vendace) and 17.3 cm (roach). The water is clear, so natural colours and profiles pay, and a coarse line shows. Go down in thickness before you change the bait.
The water first, then the municipality, then the county
Twenty-one counties, from Dalarna with 5,992 waters to Gotland with 29. Behind the map are 27,060 lakes, 13,515 rivers and streams and 393 coastal waters where the species are known.

Twenty-five waters, written out
For most waters the page is the measurements and what they say. For twenty-five there is also a guide: the lake, the fish people travel for, one good day, and the rest of the year.
If you have one day on Bolmen, take it early in May, when the reeds haven't come up yet and the pike are still in the bays after spawning. The water is still cold, so don't start too early in the morning. Let the sun warm the shallow bays for a couple of hours first.
Start in Gäddviken on the western side, not far from Sunnaryd. The name says what it is: Pike Bay, shallow, with reeds and a soft bottom.

Vänern, Vättern, Mälaren, Hjälmaren, Siljan and Storsjön are there, and so is Gudmundaredssjön: thirteen hectares in the inland of Varberg, six metres at its deepest, and the perch's lake.
