Athens, Greece · November 2022A brother in Athens
We arrived in Athens in November 2022, on our way to Paraguay. Our luggage was lost for the first couple of days, and we were staying in a hostel that was far too expensive for us, praying for somewhere cheaper where we could cook and wash clothes.
We didn't know anyone in the city. One day we saw a man sitting on the steps up to a house. Everything he had was there with him. He seemed to live outside. He reached out towards us, trying to give our children some bananas. I never learned his name.
We talked for a while, and he told us he loved Jesus. Then we said goodbye and walked on, lifted by this loving brother.
After maybe fifty metres, he came running after us on his crutch, with two croissants and a juice in his hands. He gave them to us with his hand on his heart, and happy, loving tears in his eyes.
He had next to nothing, and he gave it to us. I still can't think of him without tears.
“He gave with his hand on his heart.”
